a single toy catches a childs called toyi.
toyi is described as an eco-friendly creative building kit, and it recently won the well-known if design award. it came from istanbul, turkish, where a young female designer named elif atmaca first came up with the idea for it when she wanted to help the kids living in disadvantaged areas. these children do not have access to the variety of interesting toys that wealthier children do.
toyi atmacas design allows children to transform what are around them into clever toys. it consists of sticks, junction parts, flexible connectors, toy body parts like feet, eyes, hands, and wheels that can be used to turn old water bottles, cups, boxes, towels, etc. into cute, clever, and unique playthings. this toy kit upcycles(升级利用) materials that would otherwise go to waste, turning a recycling bin into a treasure container.
“our initial target was to deliver toyi kits to only disadvantaged children in turkish,” atmaca told the media. but during a research conducted with around 300 children, .she realized that the restriction on being creative went beyond any boundary. “i saw that everything was planned and shaped by grown-ups, blocking the kids imagination in a significant way,” said atmaca.
atmaca concluded that each kid needed space where he or she could freely create. she explained the entire process should be left to kids’ creativity, reminding teachers and all grown-ups that child-led play was an excellent way for children to develop lifelong skills.
toyis creators are now considering distributing the kits to as many children as possible around the world through different international ngos. atmaca notes that for each toyi kit sold out, they will also donate one kit to a disadvantaged child through different partnerships around the world.

i have frequently taught research methods and design to college students at several institutions. i love teaching this course. one reason, of course, is that i enjoy thinking about research methodology (方法学) and sharing it with others. the other reason, however, is the obvious impact that it has on students. every term, one (if not more) student tells me how taking this course has affected him/her: “i used to just read articles and believe what they said, but now i find myself asking ‘is this true? how do they know? is this a well designed study?” that is what i want the students to achieve in this course.
this brings to mind something written by dorothy l. sayers in 1948. one of her books, the lost tools of learning speaks to sayers’ thoughts on education. “by teaching our young men and women to read, we have left them at the mercy of the printed words. by the invention of the film and the radio,we have made certain that no dislike for reading shall protect them from the constant battery of words, words, words. they do not know what the words mean: they are victims to words in their emotions instead of being the masters of them in their intelligence.”
we are well past the 1940s, but her observation is still relevant. sayers’ point is well taken. in the world of 24-hour news and social media that often resembles (类似) the wild west, the ability to carry out evaluations has never been more important. in order to resist the distortions with which we are constantly bombed in the media, as well as be able to present a persuasive argument, we must be able to reason well, and think and give a judgement carefully.
when my students begin the research methods and design course, they are generally not content to read all those research article i give. however, by the end of the course, they are excited about their newly obtained abilities.
28. what is the author’s course goal for her students?
a. thinking critically.????????????????????????????????????????????????? b. reading deeply.
c. designing studies well.??????????????????????????????????????????? d. questioning themselves.
29. what did sayers imply about education?
a. it was boring.???????????????????????????????????????????????????????? b. it was worrying.

c. it was conventional.???????????????????????????????????????????????? d. it was useless.
30. what does the underlined word “distortions” in paragraph 3 refer to?
a. popular news.???????????????????????????????????????????????????????? b. various evaluations.
c. persuasive arguments.????????????????????????????????????????????? d. misleading information.
31. why does the author write the text?
a. to review a book.?????????????????????????????????????????????????? b. to introduce a writer.
c. to suggest a practical skill.?????????????????????????????????????? d. to criticize social media.

when we’ve got children?it’s typical of us to give careful thought to how much tv the children are watching and exposed to. are we being overprotective about the effect reality tv is having on our child? the answer is “no”. or rather, there’s increasing evidence that these programs can have a profound influence on young people.
a recent research indicates that some reality tv shows can be as damaging for teenage girls as too many cartoons are for kids. the truth is that reality tv is anything but reality—but that’s not necessarily what our children believe. a study for the girl scout research institute in the us found that eight out of ten girls aged between 11 and 17 who regularly watch reality shows believe these programs describe real life. in fact, much of reality tv is a heavily manipulated (操纵) view of what’s really happening, and the worst of it strengthens the sort of female stereotypes women have spent decades trying to remove.
many of the women on reality tv shows are acting out lives as teenage mothers or drama queens. strong, hard-working, purposeful young women with ambitions beyond their looks are rare in these programs. there’s a widespread emphasis on the value of women concerning how they look and dress, which gives young viewers the message that being a woman is all about style and appearance, not what you do or stand for. imran siddiquee, director of social media and outreach, is concerned that these programs show the worst stereotypes of womanhood and “normalize” them in what appear to be everyday settings. “they offer such a limited view of what it is to be a woman, and all over the world young girls are addicted to it,” he says.
we should encourage our children to be critical thinkers. whether reality tv is changing our children’s views, or whether they are attracted to programs that agree with their beliefs, it’s vital we that their viewing habits could strengthen these unbalanced ideas.
32. who is this passage most probably intended for?
